the reason that this line is significant is because jim morita was a japanese-american soldier. while it’s never explicitly stated, here’s what morita’s life would have been like before being captured by HYDRA:
december 7, 1942: the empire of japan attacked pearl harbor. he was probably a soldier at this time since he was considered to be elite enough for steve’s squad; unknown where he served, although there were many japanese-american soldiers who died in and who were the first responders to the attack.
december 8, 1942: the us declares a state of war with japan.
all japanese-american men disqualified from the draft via the label “4-C,” or “enemy alien,” no matter their citizenry. all japanese-american men in the service are removed from duty.
february 19, 1942: president roosevelt signed executive order 9066, authorizing the military to exclude certain groups from military zones.
the fbi searched the homes of japanese-americans for “contraband,” including correspondence with anyone in japan such as personal letters. any such contraband is confiscated.
(fun sidenote: how did they know where to find these people so that they could be harassed? well, gosh, the census bureau told them. illegally. no big deal.)
community leaders, including priests, gathered up and sent to prison camps like tule lake. this is also where several families were sent to be deported to japan since they were not deemed loyal enough.
122,000 people of japanese-american descent are told to sell or store their property as they can only bring what they can carry out of the “exclusion zones,” which meant most of the west coast. (hawaii, whose population was about a quarter japanese, was for the most part not included in this.) given only a few weeks to organize their lives, they were then sent via cattle train to concentration camps set up throughout the us.
since morita was from fresno, he would have ended up here:
sunny poston, arizona. conveniently built on an indian reservation against the wishes of the tribal council, who wanted nothing to do with the government’s white supremacist bullshit. why only infringe on the rights and wishes of one minority group, right?
choice quote: ”After fifteen months at Arizona’s vast Poston Relocation Center as a social analyst, Commander Leighton concluded that many an American simply fails to remember that U.S. Japanese are human beings.”
shortly after arriving, all prisoners were asked to fill out a survey. most of the questions would be simple, like their name, city of birth, etc, but questions 27 and 28 were different.
question 27: Are you willing to serve in the armed forces of the United States on combat duty, wherever ordered?
question 28: Will you swear unqualified allegiance to the United States of America and faithfully defend the United States from any and all attacks by foreign and domestic forces, and forswear any form of allegiance or disobedience to the Japanese Emperor, or any other foreign government, power, or organization?
did you answer yes to both? congratulations! you’re a soldier. did you answer no to both? perhaps you’re too old or sick to serve? perhaps the general fuckery of this entire situation got you down? perhaps you were born outside of the us, so you can’t disavow your country of origin since there is a very real chance you’ll be deported? haha well congratulations hope you like prison and/or deportation
so all of this goes on
and then morita goes on to serve
and get captured
and rescued
and dumbass doogan says, “what, are we taking everybody?”
Like, I don’t think a lot of people who have only watched the movies (there is nothing wrong with only watching the movies, not trying to gatekeep, just trying to explain) how touching this relationship is.
When Steve and Clint first met, Clint had a chip on his shoulder a mile wide. It was understandable though, Clint was heavily abused and had previously worked for the circus. He thought Steve too old fashioned and out of touch.
There was a power struggle there as Clint and Wanda and Pietro were the new Avengers recruits and Steve was the only senior officer left and the leader. This team was infamously called Cap’s Kooky Quartet, BUT…
Steve taught Clint how to throw a punch. Saved his life multiple times. Showed Clint that he genuinely did care and eventually Clint reached a point where he would do anything for Steve.
Clint is so loyal to Cap that one time, when the Avengers were caught up in the Kree war during the Galactic Storm storyline they had to physically KNOCK CLINT OUT COLD to be able to leave Steve behind because Clint wasn’t having it, even in a ‘needs of the many vs. the needs of the few or the one’ situation…
And, when Steve was feeling depressed and on the verge of quitting the Avengers, Clint was the one who tried to cheer him up…
And, of course, in the recent Secret Empire storyline, as much as I hate it, there is one thing that is touching… Clint leads a team determined to save the real!Steve rather than kill his evil counterpart outright. So much love there.
So, yes, Steve and Clint. Their friendship is beautiful. I love them.

I remember a lot of things about my mother – many people assume because I was quite young when she passed, that I’d forget – that over the years with all that goes by, that she would sink to the back of my mind and collect dust. I’m here to say that ISN’T the case. ( And lemme tell you, those implants I had during the war – as much as they tried to FRAZZLE my memories, the truth and certain memories would never subside ).
❜
❛
Where do I even start? I would USUALLY start with describing her past – her name was Sarah, a nurse who also worked in a garment factory – two jobs. Ma wasn’t a quitter - she’d do everything she could to put a roof over my head. She’d come to the country with my pa from Ireland, having to put up with the worst of treatment because of where she was FROM. God, I admire her. Her and my father had to put up with words of slander, LOOKS from the crowd, just because of where they were FROM. For her to stand up through it all was something that I carried in my BLOOD; her determination and strength was something I always admired.
❜
❛
To live through the times we lived in, she had to be resourceful. Which often meant boiled foods – one of my LEAST fond memories was when she would make me eat my carrots. I hated ‘em. I STILL hate ‘em. But on some days, when we could afford it, she managed to get an apple or two – especially if my grandpa Ian ( who would always smell of apples ) would be around. That’s when she’d make the sweetest pie known to man, to this day I’ve never tasted anythin’ like it. Made eatin’ those carrots worth it – to have a slice of that pie. She’d make it on my Birthday too and dust it with powdered sugar, which was expensive. But she’d always do it, just because she cared. Not that she needed to show me how much she loved me, but because she WANTED to. Even with what little we had, she would make the best out of it.
❜
❛
When I came home hurt she’d sit me down and talk, patch me up and call me a soldier. I’d cry – because it hurt, and she’d tell me it was okay to feel that way. It was OKAY to hurt, but don’t dwell in it – she’d tell me that there was no stronger strength than the heart. Nothin’ made a bruise better than a little love and a bandage. When I was sick she’d be the one to look after me; she’d come into my room, sit by my side and read me stories. She was pretty eager to get me to read too – so I’d sit there and she’d listen. I loved looking at my pa’s old maps, so she’d explain where places were, what they troops did. And of course, she’d put on the radio when we were lucky, and we’d listen to the baseball. I knew she wasn’t a fan of the sport, but she’d act just as happy about it. She gave the best hugs – it’s not often I say somethin’ like that but I figure todays a good of a day as any. I’d so easily fall asleep in her arms. She was kind and loving, I only wish one day I could be a parent like she was…
❜
❛
On days my father would lash out she’d be the one protecting me.
❜
❛
She told me to hide under the table, most of the time. Even though eyes filled with tears I could see her protecting me, taking what my father did to her, her face bloody with a mixture of tears over her, nothing made my heart ache more than hearing my father shout at her, hearing him curse and for her to have to endure it, but pleading for it to stop, standing her ground despite being pushed down constantly – it wasn’t his fault, she would sometimes say. She blamed the war and the drinks – she HATED when he would drink, which when he came back, was all the time. I loved my father, he fought for the country I live in, and the country I love and still continue to fight for – but when he came home he just wasn’t the same. It was upsetting to say the least, to watch what he did to himself, and most of all what he did to my mother. But she never backed down, she ALWAYS stood up. She loved my father too, and I knew she was in pain – regardless, she would cast that aside to protect me. When my pa passed, she looked after me alone. Working twice as hard and working most days and most nights just so I could have food the next day – she’d even sacrifice HER food for me. She’s done so much, so very much. I used to feel so helpless and learned to HATE that feeling…
❜
❛
When she fell sick I was right there. You know, I got a job in a pharmacy – if you could call it a JOB. I was hardly there since I was so frail, but since the paper-round didn’t work out with all the boys stealin’ my work – I managed to get a job after I actually tried to STEAL medicine for my ma and got caught. I wasn’t very good at stealin’, my heart wasn’t in it – but I needed to get it for her, since she’d done SO much for me. It was the least I could do… and I was caught, but anyway, as payment the kind old man that ran the pharmacy would pay me with medicine for my ma. She said she was proud…
❜
❛
I sat there by her side every day, every night, just as she did for me. On days I was sick I would rest beside her, and even then I could remember feeling her arm around me. Even while she was sick she’d protect me…
❜
❛I remember my mother for being the best woman in the world, for having the biggest heart and the most gentle voice. On days when I feel alone I can hear her talking to me. She was everything I strive to be, she was incredible. People often call ME a hero – no, my MOTHER was the REAL hero.
❜
okay so out of ALL of the wonderful panels in this weeks Captain America Sam Wilson (#8), this panel found a way to get to me the most;
Whenever I see Steve doing something like that, it hits a nerve, possibly because he’s pulled similar poses in the past when he’s in a deep state of contemplation – staring at his shield, re-evaluating everything; his life, his choices, his (foreordained) destiny at some points. Steve generally used to be an expressive character, and actually used to CRY [ onnumerousoccasions ] — he’s pretty emotional, which loads of people seem to forget due to the fact he’s a ‘soldier’, yes, he’s a soldier, that doesn’t make him any less human. But right there – he’s so serious for the rest of the issue, and this panel in particular shows the most emotion.
[slamdunks this under a cut because it’s huge and I got feelsy ]

★— [[ Where do I start really, I’ve actually read a few books on Cap in relation to American politics since I actually did my dissertation in uni on the usage of him as propaganda and how it influences perception of the US, all in all how the comics industry is perceived by other nation states and how particular characters can carry political sway - what with Tony being created and structured around the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction and Cap obviously being one of the most famed characters in terms of extreme propaganda - fighting Nazi’s and punching Hitler in the face. Steve was based around the concept of the old American Dream, I stress the OLD concept because in modern day that idea has been warped to a degree that it has become so distant from the old concept. American politics is convoluted, and so is Steve’s relationship with it.
I’ll start with American politics as a whole rather than particular legislations otherwise we’ll be here all day. Being a product of the US Army, being raised in a world of War – not experiencing peace and following with blind loyalty as a youngster Roosevelt [ I assume he fell into the ice before Truman] was someone Steve admired. It was a true honour to serve under the President, especially someone who implemented the New Deal programme to help restore the American Economy. Steve, however, wasn’t too partial on knowing the ins and out and specifics of things, he just knew that he wanted peace – so did the President, and so again as part of the Army Steve would gain that mentality that most soldiers have; The President’s word is untouchable, they are but a drop in the ocean, following their tasks set to create a safer nation and a safer world. I believe when Steve was younger and used to listen to the radio or look at the papers, to see someone with that much sway was simply awe-inspiring, sure he was no Kennedy, but still inspiring. How can he not admire someone who holds the country that he loves on his shoulders. He RESPECTED the man, didn’t question his policies because it wasn’t his PLACE to. Being aware that this was just when Steve stepped into the boots of Captain America too, so authority was a new and foreign concept to him – again I assume that he looked to the president for leadership strategies. Back then, he didn’t have much to do with politics asides from being the poster boy for the American troops. I assume back in the 1940′s Steve was far too wrapped up in trying to find an end to the war and fighting the good fight rather than delving into the political ideals that he was facing and part of.
★— [[ Okay I just want to talk about Steve’s new shield for a moment. So according to the concept, it’s mildly based off the holo-shield seen in his Commander days, or more recently in his team up with Tony in Madripoor;
“
this one has two main innovations: its tip can deploy an “energy blade” so Cap can cut into things, and the shield can be divided in two, so Steve can use both halves, one with each arm. Both modifications will help us see a completely different set of moves for Captain America, moves that we [have] never seen Steve use before, in terms of hand-to-hand combat.
“
So we’re talking two hand combat styles here // Dual wielding. Some say it provides advantages but most weapons experts disagree as it increases vulnerability with the lack of defence.
I’m going to look at this from a tactical point from the concept art. So you’ve got the blunt of the shield (the face) that can detach from the point and the blade can be used separately. Essentially that means punching with the left and swinging with the right. This is a pretty useful tactic for Steve. Given his boxing background where he’s taught to keep his dominant arm behind him, assuming here that Steve’s right handed (which he tends to be unless the artist decides to switch, which they’ve done sometimes) - so how’s that relevant to his new shield? It means that with a natural stance and dominant hand (the one with the blade) behind him, he doesn’t have to readjust his traditional style. (Unless he converts (into a right-handed southpaw rather than left-handed orthodox fighter style for some tactical advantages in having a strong front arm). So lets just say he keeps it traditional. The use of dual weaponry is an extreme advantage - and that’s just ONE of the many styles Steve’s developed that he can integrate into his new weaponry. Close combat would be this weapons forte – whereas projection I assume would be a weakness.
It’s strange to see Steve not using the weapon largely as a projectile, but we’ll see how that goes. The shape of it isn’t ideal for throwing but that being said, he did so in the 1940′s without much question. Must’ve gotten stuck in lots of places though. This one especially due to the blade tip, and once he detaches the blade from the face he’ll have no choice but to keep combat close, given how the other parts wouldn’t really go too far. (I do like that it’s purposely designed to resemble a medieval ‘Heater’ shield though [ or a Kite shield with a flatter edge at the top] I like the reference they're trying to make ) He’s always been good at hand to hand but lets just assume he’s going to get a couple more gadgets in the future to help him in regards to taking out opponents from a distance. (Seems Sam’s got his back if they’re fighting together, making a nice balance of captains; Sam going for the distance and Steve going for the close).
I can’t actually wait to see more specifics on the shield and the power that the blade may have. Vibranium enforced particles seemed to be the justification behind the holoshield so if they’re doing something similar then it’d be interesting to see what exactly Steve can cut through. I always thought it’d be cool if he had a weapon that could cut through armour, it’d make his job so much easier but many people throw up the debate that it’s making him a more violent character given the nature of he shield was to DEFEND rather than hurt. I can see the practicality of it, but again it may be compromising the message that used to surround Steve– again it depends how he uses it, only time will tell. ]]
Steve Rogers was your average kid, a who had nothing. He grew up during the great depression which resulted in him later on having a great value for everything that he now receives. He was meek as a child and was constantly bullied for his small size, that added to the fact that he had an extremely poor immune system and was diagnosed with every ailment and illness under the sun. Instead he continued with his education, specialising in arts where he constantly depicted himself as a super-hero, or drew heroes that could help save him.
After his mother (Sarah) passed away he faced a severe depression which he masked by engulfing himself in his pursuit of achieving his dream; joining the army and following in the footsteps of his father (Joseph).
He was constantly rejected. Time after time due to his small stature until he was taken on board project ‘rebirth’ where with the assistance of Howard Stark’s technology and Dr Josef Reinstien – he was turned into a super soldier. Initially he was a poster boy, being used for marketing campaigns by the US army in order to encourage recruitment as well as help improve the general PR image.
Breaking the rules and letting his complex get in the way, he decided to take down US’s number one enemy at the time – the Red Skull.
It was during a fight with Baron Zemo - that he had lost his best friend, Bucky Barnes in a tragic fall when the boy wonder was strapped to a rocket. Steve watched the rocket explode and that image had forever haunted his nightmares.
Taking down the Red Skull, he managed to save the country – however, it involved extreme self sacrifice as he steered the plane he was in into the sea. Luckily enough, it was preserved in ice as the sub-zero conditions froze Steve in a block of ice for a number of decades. The super-soldier serum is what had kept him alive all this time, preserved in ice until eventually he was thawed free – waking up, confused, dazed and delusional.
